Trump Made $2.3B From Crypto. His Investors Lost $2.3B. Reuters Did the Math.

The president’s family ran four crypto projects. Investors put in $2.3 billion. The Trump family pocketed $2.3 billion. The investors are left holding bags.

That’s the finding of a bombshell Reuters investigation published June 9, which reviewed corporate filings, blockchain data, and statements from four Trump-linked crypto ventures: World Liberty Financial (WLFI), the $TRUMP meme coin, ALT5 Sigma, and American Bitcoin. The conclusion is stark — a near-perfect dollar-for-dollar wealth transfer from retail investors to the First Family, with total startup costs that Reuters estimates may have been less than $1 million.

The Numbers

ProjectTrump Family ProfitInvestor Losses
World Liberty Financial (WLFI)~$1.05B (75% of $1.4B raised)Token buyers still holding
$TRUMP meme coin~$616M$700M+
ALT5 SigmaEquity/tokens (undisclosed)~$675M (shares: $9 → $0.75)
American BitcoinEquity/tokens (undisclosed)~$200M (shares: $11 → $1.15)
Total~$2.3B~$2.25B

In every case, the structure was the same: the Trumps received tokens, equity, or revenue share in exchange for their name and promotion — without putting significant cash in. The investors provided the capital. The Trumps collected the upside.

World Liberty Financial: The Biggest Windfall

WLFI is the crown jewel. The project raised over $1.4 billion by selling governance tokens to retail and institutional buyers. A revenue-sharing agreement routes 75% of net proceeds to a Trump-controlled entity. That’s over $1 billion funneled to the family for a project that, by most accounts, required minimal upfront capital from them.

The Meme Coin Math

The $TRUMP meme coin launched in January 2025 and generated roughly $616 million for the Trump family — while the people who actually bought the token are sitting on losses exceeding $700 million as the price collapsed from its launch highs.

ALT5 and American Bitcoin: The Stock Plays

Two publicly traded companies also feature in Reuters’ accounting. ALT5 Sigma shares cratered from over $9 to $0.75 by April 2026, wiping out roughly $675 million in investor value. American Bitcoin (NASDAQ: ABTC) fell from $11 to $1.15, costing shareholders another $200+ million. Both were heavily promoted by the Trump brand.

”Unlike Anything in Modern American History”

Reuters spoke to eight government ethics experts who said the arrangement represents a conflict of interest with no modern precedent: a sitting president’s administration directly regulates the crypto industry while his family extracts hundreds of millions from it.

The White House has not responded to Reuters’ findings.

Why This Matters for Crypto Jobs

This investigation will accelerate the policy pressure that’s been building all year — and that creates real career implications:

Compliance and Legal roles are surging. The intersection of crypto, securities law, and political conflict-of-interest liability is now front-page news. Firms with exposure to politically-linked tokens or governance structures are quietly hiring compliance officers, general counsel, and regulatory affairs specialists right now.

Audit and forensics demand is rising. The Reuters methodology — cross-referencing blockchain data, corporate filings, and on-chain wallet activity — is exactly what crypto forensics firms do. If Congress opens hearings (and they will), every firm with a government contract or exchange license will need people who can do this work from the inside.

The window for “move fast” crypto startups is narrowing. Projects that relied on light-touch enforcement under the current administration are now operating under a spotlight. Compliance-first culture is no longer optional — it’s a survival trait.

Token structure engineers are in demand. The structural innovation here — revenue-sharing agreements, governance tokens as profit vehicles, equity-for-promotion swaps — is being scrutinized hard. Builders who understand both the tokenomics and the legal implications are becoming the most valuable hires in the room.
